Powerboat or Sailboat Lessons
We teach people to run a boat, and we do it on the water rather than in a classroom. Sail or power, your choice at the start. Most people who come to us are not picking up a hobby. They are trying to get to the point where they can walk down a dock somewhere warm, take the keys, and go, or take their own boat out on a Saturday without a knot in their stomach. Every course below is built with this in mind.

Sailing Lessons
Sail instruction runs on Beach House, our Catalina 30, or on the water wherever you are. You will handle the boat from the first hour. Points of sail, sail trim, tacking and jibing, reefing, man overboard recovery, anchoring, and docking under both power and sail.
The theory sits online. Start free with Basic Sail Trim and Navigation Rules, then Skipper Small Keelboat is $39. Register for the online courses so the coursework attaches to your on-water time with us. You do the reading at your kitchen table. We do the rest on the boat.

Powerboat Lessons
Power instruction runs on our Heritage 241 center console, or on your own boat if you want to learn on the hull you will actually be using. Close quarters handling, the way wind and current push a boat with no keel under it, backing and turning in a slip, anchoring, towing, and docking when the water is not flat.
Power carries its own international credential, the SLC-P. Same structure as the sail credential and the same verified logbook behind it. The intro course is Skipper Small Powerboat, and you start with us by registering online here.

Where We Teach
Lake Murray, out of Columbia, South Carolina, is home water and where most instruction happens.
We also teach at Daniel Island Yacht Club in Charleston, at the top of the Penobscot Bay in Maine, and out of Boston, Massachusetts. Beyond those, we instruct worldwide.
If you have a boat somewhere else, or a trip coming up and want the training done where you will actually be sailing, we travel to you.
Where the SLC Credential Takes You
We are a NauticEd school, and NauticEd operates under the American National Standards established by the US Coast Guard. That is why the certification travels.
It is recognized by the major charter fleets and by port authorities across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, including the countries that legally require a license before you can take a boat out. Croatia is the clearest case. Croatia will not let you charter unless your license appears on an official ministry list, and the SLC is on that list. Greece accepts it too.
So this is not a card that only works on Lake Murray. A charter operator handing you a 45 foot boat in a place you have never been wants documented experience, in specific conditions and specific boat sizes, and the NauticEd logbook is what documents it. Build enough hours and the boats get bigger and the destinations get further from home. If you ever want to charter in the BVI or Greece, this is the credential that gets you the keys.
If you already sail and only need the credential, you do not need lessons. The SLC requires the NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master bundle, fifty logged days with twenty five as master and twenty five on a boat over 28 feet, and a one day on-water assessment. We run that assessment for both sail and power. $750 for the day, about six hours for sail and four for power, written exam included and taken in person with us. You leave holding the license.
If you never intend to charter and you just want to run your own boat well, the credential is still worth earning, because the process of earning it is the process of learning to do this properly.

From the inland waters of the United States, to the sunny Caribbean, to the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, we are available for sail and powerboat charter and training on vessels up to 100 Tons.
That covers deliveries, passages, and charters where you want a licensed captain aboard rather than a course. You buy the boat in Annapolis and want it in Florida. You have a week in the Med and nobody in the group is ready to skipper it. You are new to a boat that is bigger than anything you have run before.
Here is the part most captains do not offer. You learn the entire time. Every hour you are aboard with us is instruction whether we call it that or not, and if you want it logged toward your credential, we log it. You end the trip having gone somewhere and having gotten better, instead of having watched someone else do it.

Q: What does instruction cost?
A: $180 an hour, or $720 for a four hour session. Most people book two sessions.
Q: Do you teach powerboat credentials or only sail?
A: Both. Sail students start with Skipper Small Sailboat, power students with Skipper Small Powerboat. The SLC is the advanced, international sail credential, the SLC-P the power one. Same verified logbook structure behind each.
Q: Why two sessions?
A: The first session gets you comfortable and competent. The second improves on these new skills and includes a professional assessment toward the next qualification.
Q: Is the price per person?
A: No. $720 covers one person or a couple learning together. Two people on the boat, one price. We do it that way because the couples who learn together are the ones who actually use the skill afterward. When one person can run the boat and the other is a passenger, the boat stays at the dock.
Q: Do I need to buy anything before my first session?
A: Yes, the online theory for your path. Sail students take Skipper Small Sailboat, $39. Power students take Skipper Small Powerboat, $95. Q: Do you offer training for international yacht licenses?
A: Yes. If you have dreams of captaining a yacht in the Mediterranean or anywhere across the globe, we provide the training and verification required to earn your Sailing License and Credentials (SLC) or Power License (SLC-P). Q. What do I need before an SLC assessment?
A. The NauticEd Bareboat Charter Master bundle completed, and fifty qualifying days in your NauticEd logbook, at least twenty five as master of the vessel and twenty five on a boat over 28 feet. Bring a government boating safety certificate. Tell us where you stand before booking and we will tell you honestly whether you are ready.
Q. What does an SLC assessment cost?
A. $750 for the day. About six hours for sail, four for power. That is the on-water validation required for the SLC and SLC-P, and it is separate from instruction. The written exam is taken in person with us the same day. If you already sail and just need the practical sign off, this is what you book.
Q: Can I learn on my own boat?
A: For power, yes, and it is often the better choice. For sail, instruction at Lake Murray runs on our Catalina 30. If we are traveling to you, we teach on your boat or a charter boat.
Q: What are your qualifications?
A: USCG licensed Master Captain of 100T vessels, power, sail, and tow. We hold both the NauticEd Sailing License and Credential, the SLC, and the powerboat equivalent, the SLC-P, and instruct for both worldwide. NauticEd rank is Level V Captain, Chief Sailing Instructor and Assessor, and Level V Bareboat Charter Master, Chief Powerboat Instructor and Assessor.
Q: Do I have to already know how to sail?
A: No. Plenty of people we take out have never been on a sailboat. ⛵️
